Developing a successful website that you’re proud of is not as hard as you may think. Especially nowadays, because there is software available that takes on much of the work that used to be relegated to the webmaster (which is you!).

In the past, in order to build web pages from scratch, you had to know HTML, or “Hyper Text Markup Language.” And truth be told, you are still better off knowing at least the basics of HTML. Nevertheless, it’s not required. Especially if you find easy web design software that does the main work takes care of this for you. Now, every single HTML editor on the planet now features a “WYSIWYG” interface. (What You See Is What You Get.) So, theoretically, you shouldn’t have to know the first thing about HTML tags.

The truth is, however, not all HTML editors (or “web design software”) does WYSIWYG well. Little annoying problems tend to crop up. For example, say you typed the following sentence using your handy HTML editor:

“Discover the best places to SCUBA dive in the Cayman Islands.” Say you want “best places” to be italicized and “Cayman Islands” to be bolded. Here’s what’s supposed to happen:

Behind the scenes, your HTML editor is supposed to ‘type’ the phrase as such: Discover the best places to SCUBA dive in the Cayman Islands. (Extra spaces were added between the tags for this example, in order to keep the article publishing software from handling it like normal HTML.)

But instead, this is what you get: “Discover the best places to SCUBA dive in the Cayman Islands.” Even though you highlighted the words “best places” and clicked the little graphical icon on your html editor’s toolbar that represented italics, your phrase comes out non-italicized. And your bolded words are not bolded.

Well, in this instance, you’d have to go to the “Source View” of your HTML editor and manually insert the above HTML tags to make these things happen. This is a very annoying problem with too many popular web design software titles nowadays.

Another problem that will have you pulling your hair out, is seeing a totally different result in the web browser than you see in your HTML editor window. For example, your formatting changes are (apparently) taking effect as you type–just as it should (remember it’s advertised as WYSIWYG)…

However, they don’t show up when you publish the page to the internet! I don’t know why, but this problem still plagues most web design software to this day.

Lucky for you, there are a few (very few) good software titles that work for cheap, while doing all the other things to make your site professional and (if you want) draw visitors by the hundreds.

If you’ve built a few websites that aren’t getting the traffic you expected, perhaps you’ve unknowingly made one of the 10 common web design mistakes. I’m not really sure if you’re a big business, but for small time stuff, you could go to webs or blog.com. If you want your own domain name though, (and you’re still a small business) you could use iWeb, which allows you to upload to your own server. These are both graphic design methods, so they’re not the most flexible.

as far as what I prefer, I like to simply use wordpad but as far as what is the most user friendly would probably be Dreamweaver. The reason I don’t use this however is that sometimes I have had some troubles with it in the past. It has for what ever reason lost some of my coding and I’ve had to try to figure out what it lost.

How to Build a Website: Tutorial in 3 Steps

Building a website is an often overlooked topic in the deluge of ebooks out there on how to start a business. 

But maybe you just want to build a simple website where you can put up a few photos and share them with your family and friends. 

Recently, a friend of mine needed a website to display his resume online. 

Or, maybe you just want to build a website to sell online and make enough residual income for a car payment.

With the right tools, building a website can be a step by step process and is much more simple than many people might think.  It’s definitely not something to fear any longer.  If you can get online and read this article, you can certainly build a website.  You just need a little instruction.

Here are a few tips for getting started.

* Have an idea on what you need the website to do.  Will it be for family photos, a resume, your journal entries, or do you want to put up products for sale, or work with affiliates and sell their products?  Keeping this in mind gives you an idea on how complex building the site will be. 

* Find an easy web building tool.  This step is key.  I’ve built numerous websites and have tried many of the tools out there.  Some cost big bucks, some charge monthly fees before you even begin building, but I’ve found that the best, and easiest tool, is actually free.  Tripod, owned by Lycos, lets you build your entire site before they charge you a penny.  If you don’t like where you end up, you can start over and try again, all for no cost.  If you like what you’ve built then the only cost is for a domain name (includes hosting fees) and removes any advertisements from your site.  Simple as that.

* Find people like you who can help get you started and that you can talk to along the way.  I didn’t have this chance when I got started, but it would have helped me drastically.  With the advent of social networking sites, you can easily find a community where there are others like you who are in the same position, or willing to coach.

I want to be able to add a very long form to my website. It needs to be broken down into several screens since it is so long e.g. step 1, step 2, etc. I need to make sure that it would work with the server when I submit it.
