Using Facebook Ad creates an advert to appear in a small box in the right sidebar of Facebook pages, displaying information, promotions, an image and a link to your chosen destination.

Setting up a Facebook Ad is quick and simple to do, working on either a Cost Per Click (CPC) or Cost Per Thousand Impressions (CPM) basis by bidding on keywords. Using the personal preferences most Facebook users have provided when setting up an account, advertisers can choose from a range of options to target their ads specifically to as direct or broad audience as they like.

These ads are run daily, according to the model you have chosen, and are set within a maximum daily budget – so you will never overspend accidentally. Facebook is used by a staggering 500 million people worldwide, so the audience potential in this medium is pretty high, whatever your targeted demographic.

Ads are comprised of a destination URL (which can be your Facebook page itself, your website or blog, or any landing page you choose), a title (25 characters max), the ad’s body text (135 characters max) and an image. Facebook make it as easy as possibly by making suggestions for content and images via the link provided.

You are then able to configure your targeted area and audience, by location (country/city), age (you are even able to target people on their birthdays), gender, marital status/sexuality, language, likes and interests, education and work information, and by existing contacts and friends on Facebook. You are given a running total of the reach of your ad, depending on your chosen demographic.

Your ‘Campaigns and Pricing’ options include currency, country and time zone, campaign name, maximum daily budget, specific date scheduling or continuous distribution, and a choice between CPM or CPC, including your maximum bid. Facebook also make suggestions for budgets and costs, and give an example of estimated impressions or clicks per day for each price. Organise and manage this aspect according to your budget, aims and analysis of your marketing campaign. An SEO company can be invaluable in helping with this if you are unsure what you are doing.

You are able to review your ad at this point, and ensure that all links, images and information are fully working and correct. Advertisements must comply with the Facebook ad guidelines.

Payment options are via Visa or Mastercard credit/debit card or PayPal and billing is daily. You have access to conversion tracking and analytics of your ads. “Facebook Insights”allows you to see the actual results of your campaign, as opposed to just your targeted audience. You can use this to analyse and adapt your ads to make them most effective. Facebook ads can also be tracked with Google Analytics.

Adverts can be used in a variety of ways:

To drive traffic to your Facebook page and increase the amount of ‘fans’ or ‘likes’ for that page (a ‘like’ button is included in the ad for ease of use, and the user’s actions are documented on their profile wall for doing so).
To drive traffic to your website or a targeted landing page.
To publicise a promotion, new product or service (i.e. a temporary campaign as opposed to a long-running one)
To increase awareness of a brand or service.
To hold a competition or poll.

The social nature of Facebook means that it is most useful for strengthening brand reputation and awareness, building a steady, loyal group of fans and customers around your page or profile, which in turn will increase your authority and presence. Hard-sell ads are not necessarily the way to go – the basis of social media is the exchange of information and is not consumer-driven. Providing interesting information, fun competitions, games and promotions is a better way to generate interest in your Facebook page – and in turn, your company. Users of Facebook groups and fan pages want to be part of something that engages and amuses them, and the most successful business pages on Facebook do just that.

ROI is variable, dependent on the targeted audience and nature of the product or business and ad itself. The formula relies on testing and adapting accordingly, making changes as you see results to optimise the success of this type of advertising. A trusted, experienced SEO company can help with getting this right for you.

The term Social Network applies to a number of different online platforms including the familiar Facebook and My Space web sites as well as social bookmarking services like Digg and StumbleUpon. Also Services like Twitter and Squidoo fall into the social Networking category. But its worth taking a look at how the more familiar services can help the entrepreneur and online marketer.

The social nature of Facebook means that the home worker can grow a friends list very quickly. Add a friend wait for them to confirm and then explore their friends for people you know.

Before long they’ll have a network of people with which to exchange contact numbers, ideas and events. But where it gets interesting is when they organize their contacts into ‘Groups’. This allows people with an interest in what your group is about to join.

Suddenly the home based entrepreneur has a captive audience of like minded people to market to. I regularly get invitations to plays that my friends are performing in, as well as parties that friends-of-friends have organized.

To add to this natural way of creating a captive audience on Facebook, the opportunity to place adverts on the site has been introduced.

Much like Google, with Facebook advertising you would set your advert up to appear for search terms and you can specify the target audience i.e. 18-20 year old, University Graduates, over 50s and so on.

When trying this a year ago I was stunned by the response I had from my 3 by 1 inch advert. But the main draw for using Facebook advertising is that, as of this writing, the cost per click averages about 33% of what you would pay Google or Yahoo. So your investment is very low compared to the main players in this space.

Like any online service there are rules for the submission of adverts. All adverts must be circumspect, with tidy graphics and grammatically correct copy. Once submitted, the ad is perused by a human being who makes sure that the advert doesn’t conflict with the smooth lines of their Graphical User Interface. And once they’re happy, your advert goes live.

As with other cost-per-click services, Facebook also provides analytics so that you can measure your adverts performance and make changes if necessary.

So why n

Facebook Advertising for New Marketers

But there’s one other strategy you might want to consider – one that at first may seem premature for a new blog or website. And that is advertising on Facebook. It’s not for everyone, of course – but if you fit a certain profile, it can be the fastest way to turn your site or blog into an authority site and increase it’s page rank.

You could invest in a pay-per-click (PPC) campaign – if you’re going to pay for advertising at all. But anyone who has tried to find a good keyword with competition that isn’t overwhelming, then register a dot com domain for it, knows all too well that finding that keyword unregistered is akin to winning millions on the lottery.

The Hazards of Keyword Selection

And if you pick a keyword with heavy competition, no one’s going to notice you.  Especially if you’re just using that long-tail for SEO purposes, rather than purchasing PPC. (And this is especially true for internet marketers – one group fully aware of and savvy to keyword SEO – unlike, for example, the majority of people in, say, knitting forums, where the main interest is knitting; not marketing.)

If you do have a clear niche, however, and a strong demographic that is narrow and precise, your fastest road to creating a profitable presence could be to invest in a Facebook ad. You can purchase one inexpensively, run it for a set amount of time – and have your site spread via the best route of all: The buzz created among your social network friends (all of whom are sitting there, right in your specific niche demographic).

Remember, this is an experiment. Set your daily allotment low, and track it. (Facebook does allow you to do that.)

Maximizing Your Ad

Make the most of Facebook ads’ graphics ability, and add an appealing photo or image (just look at those Facebook ads down the right-hand side of your profile page, to see examples of visually strong ads).

And Facebook’s ability to target by city, state and country is one of its best ad features. If your website or blog is dependent on location (i.e. “Niagara Falls Orchard Photography”) and you’ve also created a Fan Page on Facebook, you may find you’ve got it made.

One caution, however: Do make sure that you actually do use strong, specific keywords for your niche in your ad headline and body text.  Keep the focus narrow to that one single, specific group.

Remember that Facebook’s participants are predominantly (but not exclusively limited to) the female 18-34 range. If you were running a site that wanted to sell to a strong male demographic in a different age range, you’d need to make sure there was a good sprinkling of active Facebook groups and fan pages in that field visibly populated with males, before you went ahead with your ad.

Remember – keep your daily costs low, your target specific – and good luck with your Facebook advertising!

Facebook advertising is a cheap way to advertise your website or a product that you might have that you want to promote. I have been using it for about a month or so playing around with it now and again. I have gotten very discouraged at times and have spent some money and not made any. Actually I haven’t made much at all compared to what I have spent in advertising. It is costing me about 13 cents a click to get visitors to my site in large numbers.

The pain however of having to pay for visitors to your site can be lightened in a couple of ways. One of them being ad credits through signing up with a hosting service that offers credits when you sign up for a hosting account. The hosting account that I chose was Go Daddy. They are very affordable and reliable. They also give you a 50 dollar ad credit with Facebook, Google AdWords, and Microsoft advertising. I got a cheaper CPC through Facebook. Which is why I like using them. As far as the ads converting, well that is up to you. If you write a good ad and target it right, it will convert nicely for you.

Now another way that I got some ad credits was the visa business network. This ad coupon was 100 dollars. All you do for this is search for the visa business network in Facebook and apply for the app. This is free and they send you the coupon code through your e-mail. I actually had a little trouble with this, but I contacted Facebook and told them what was going on and in about 48 hrs I had the 100 dollar ad credited added to my account.

This is really good because all you do is set your daily budget up to not exceed your ad credits and kind of play around with the ads. This will let you know what works and what want work. This will enable you to make effective campaigns so that when you do have to start paying for your ads you can get a net profit instead of a net loss.

I am using these ads to primarily promote my website to get it some exposure in the hopes that it will become viral and spread like wildfire. The site that I am trying to promote is Dumb kids on Facebook make 9,833.57!

Question by Bianca: Can I use the term facebook in advertising?
I am making a leaflet for my horse lovers social networking site i have set up. I was thinking of using the sentence:
“think facebook, but exclusively for people who love horses”
Am I allowed to legally use the term facebook?

I am not trying to pretend to be facebook, just get across the concept of what my site is about.

If you were to say ‘see us on facebook’ it is ethically OK. People know what social networking is, so feel free to use that term. Or ‘connecting people who love horses’
