There is only one purpose that the side kick blog is supposed to have and that main purposes is simply to get traffic to certain parts of the main blog or website. There are some websites that are just too large for a person to find the information they are looking for so you make a small side kick blog that directs people to certain articles on the main blog.

This is how you get traffic to other parts of a website that go under looked for some time when you are trying to get it noticed quickly. You can do article marketing for it so that you get visitors through that medium, or you can do social bookmarking which will bring you people almost immediately. 

Doing this is also a great way to get customers for affiliate marketing. Write a review about a product and then you can get buyers that way. The only way that I learned how to make money from blogging is following a system that showed me how to do it every time I started a blog.
